Gosh, no TV.  Maybe they'd begin to talk to each other and read books, y'think?  There was a remote region of Canada that did not yet have TV until the 1970s when a Canadian mandate required that all regions of the country have TV access.  What had been a peaceful community erupted with thefts and violence soon after TV was introduced.  One thing that especially made things bad was the incessant advertising for things the people didn't even know they wanted until they saw them on TV.
