Yes I agree. The modern purpose of a patent is to provide a method whereby the inventors can profit from their inventions. The inventors seldom wish to prevent the use of their ideas. They only want others to pay for its use. This is generally provided for by a license whereby a licensed user pays the patentee a small fee for every product sold that uses that patent. If the patent isn't used, no fee is processed.
However, enter the poison of public ownership of companies. Motorola is publically-owned. They will do everything possible to maximize return upon investment for their stockholders. They have lawyers who are paid for by their investors, Mr. Kahn had lawyers paid by him. Any court will give a 90 day continuance when a new lawyer is appointed for a case. All Motorola had to do was use a new lawyer every 90 days forcing Mr. Kanh to spend more money to refile with the new lawyers. Given this, Motorola could outlast/outlive the plaintiff. Kahn got smart. He started to do his own lawyering! When Motorola realized that they were not going to be able to out-lawyer Mr. Kanh, they changed tactics. That's when Leonard started to get nasty.
Mr Kahn was a brilliant inventor and a gentleman. His name is misplaced when used with Wayne Greene. Wayne is an antagonist and a rugged individualist who has considerable following. He certainly has a right to his ideas and has done his best to propagate them. However, his personality is the antitheses of Leonard's. I knew and liked them both.
Cheers,

I never understood why people would be critical of Leonard for
defending his patents.
Apple does it.
Nokia does it.
RIM does it.
Motorola does it, and you can bet Google will continue to defend
Motorola patents......
