OK, to follow up ... I manually cleaned MSE out of the registry and reinstalled it, so it's working fine.  I found that the website windows.microsoft.com gave me a clean install.  Some of the other sites you find when you search for "Microsoft Security Essentials" are trying to sell you something else.  And it looks like PC Utility Kit, Speed Max PC and Speedy PC Pro are essentially the same beast, as the GUI looks the same -- just a different title.  I don't want to buy something I can get for free.  These others do include registry cleaners, etc.  But I already have CCleaner, so I don't think I need to pay for something similar.
