 And then reverse the sign of the reactance.
 That would be correct.
 ( and can get real dicey when R approaches zero )

 Other signals of significant amplitude will cause false nulls.
 So will mis-tuning the tuning network in the detector.
 The give-a-way is that a complete null can't be found. 

 Under such circumstances, an idea of the expected
 reading ( even ball park ) will help substantially.
