So, then, the answer to my earlier question is that "fidelity" == 
frequency response.

As a middle-aged man bordering on old age, I am not especially interested 
in frequency response, as I can't hear much above 12 KHz any more.

Signal-to-noise ratio, dynamic range, and the relative lack of distortion 
are much more important to me. In those areas, FM has AM beat, game, set, 
and match.
