Three papers of note come to mind on this topic: "Optimum Radial Ground
Systems" by Robert Sommer, N4UU published in QST, August, 2003. "The Design
of Non-Radial Ground Systems For Medium-Wave Directional Antennas" by Ogden
Prestholdt, presented at the 1978 NAB Engineering Conference and "Recent
Developments In Radial Ground Systems For AM Broadcasting" by Archibald C.
Doty, Jr. Publisher unknown.

The background and theory presented in these works can shed some insight to
the question of ground system efficiency vs azimuth. Oggie's paper is quite
interesting because one can determine where the presence or absence of
radials in an array would have the greatest impact on the pattern. It would
be interesting to compare his calculations vs a NEC model of the same
elements.
