At 850 in Boston, we bought 4160 volts from the electric company and ran out
own step down transformers. Our generator was also 4160 and before the step
downs.  The draw at 4160 was between 20 and 30 amps with everything on.

For older stations this should not be a big problem since the older 
transmitters required so much more power so there would already a lot of 
power available. Remember a few stations had their own substations 
taking only an HV feed from the utility.
