        You are a pretty much right. From all I've read, many (most?) - but 
        not all - stations were required to have a 640 or 1240 crystal and
        alternate on the air to defeat any possible radio directional finding
        missiles, etc.

        The idea was that stations around an area would jump on and off
        the air, the "programming" staying on the air by simulcasting.
        It was supposed to confuse bad guys.  In the very few times
        it was tested, it confused everyone else too, apparently.
