Thanks to you and Mike for the replies.  I got a response on another board
that suggested that the U joints supplied with the transmitter are fitted
with splined shafts pressed into them, and the collar on the u-joint splits
and the splined shaft is then free to spin.

I bit the bullet (the customer's bullet, actually) and ordered parts from
Harris today.  As you can imagine, not cheap.

The Ops manager for this station is quite curious about why repairs take so
long--- I'll make sure he's the guy on hand watching the shafts go around
while I turn the knob.

Meantime, I now have them seriously thinking about adding a new transmitter
to the inventory and keeping the Harris as a backup.
