Receiver LO radiation was a serious problem for the navy and freighters 
during WW2. Submarines could home on ships based on receiver radiation.

There are ads for Scott low-rad receivers for sale on fleabay.

I thought that the huge black box I remember as WW2 surplus was a TRF, 
not a superhet. The one I remember covered approx the 200-500 kHz range. 
I guess almost all ships monitored the 500 kHz distress frequency.
