I know this is a bit dated....but I need to respond.
What Richard refers is a biased number. Good luck living a decent life
in a good sized metro on $52 or even $60K. While the vast majority of
the population lives within 50 miles of a top 100 metro, the vast
majority living outside in rural areas median salaries are well well
below that median number. If you look at the unweighted average instead
of the median, the results indicate a very much higher income as a
result of the urbanized population being paid more.
That said, what is needed to reside in a rural area tends to be much
less than urbanized areas. Mostly related to housing, energy and
associated taxing body costs. Other things are now generally equalized
out for the most part given the "Walmartization" of rural America.
However, what many have found is their commute often is more costly than
if they simply lived closer to their work place.
So the bottom line is basically that. Making $52K in a rural area is
likely not a bad wage and $60K all the better. But $60K in an urban
market is really the equivalent of about $40-45K in a rural market. Not
all that good. And $60K in a top 5 market is equal to about $35-40K in
a rural market. Just awful. Then there is NYC, SF and LA where the
residential costs are just stratospheric and you need to make $75K or
more at minimum just to survive in a small apartment.
On a different note, the above also refers to a seasoned veteran. Mose
graduate engineers in EE, Chemical, Civil, and other select disciplines
start at $50K and go up from there. Some much over that depending on the
demand and skill sets already garnered. Most radio engineering folks
start out at something well well less than that and are lucky to make 6
figures in their career.

The US Census Bureau states Median household income for the years, 2006-2010 was $51,914. If you can't enjoy living on $10k more than that, you may be part of the problem.
