If I were to add a kilowatt backup, I'd probably use an older tube
transmitter. The solid state rigs often just don't stay on when there is a
problem with the antenna system. One client does have a tube rig and their
antenna system is touchy when the weather is bad. Works fine.
Another client replaced their tube rigs with new solid state units. That
place floods every year or two, and static jumps over the guy wire
insulators. The transmitters drop off to the point where it's unlistenable.
What I did there was make a 50 ohm 5.5db attenuator out of extra dummy load
resistors for the backup transmitter. While it's effectively lower power,
it does stay on now when the weather gets really nasty.
Since Harris drops support too soon, I tend not to purchase their units
these days. That's too bad as I've liked their equipment in the past.
