It like most offline soloutions uses a BLOB (Binary Large Object) to create the file. After the first week or so only the binary changes are archived.
A 1gb MS formated hd creates a very tiny BLOB using this archive method. Restore speed is comparable to tape for total recovery. And the Idexed BLOB is easy to manipulate for selective restore.
Carbonite is first month  free for the personal edition. You should try it.
There are some enterprise solutions that will restore the operating system. We had one for our cable plant that would restore an NT formatted server in 3 hours and the mouse pointer would be where I left it before the previous update.
Perhaps Mr. Johnson could chime in on this ?
