I'll agree that malware (almost never true viruses) account for many such emails, but I've also encountered many customers who simply have put simple passwords on their email accounts and the passwords simply get hacked with dictionary lookups. I have been doing anti-malware tech support fulltime for the past 10 years.
The user should use a tool such as ComboFix and/or Malwarebytes to check on whether this is malware or not.
