There were some pretty sophisticated audio location devices in the late 30's.  These were used for such things as locating mortar postions, etc.  So it is possible that it was a sensitive audio locator.

As soon as centrimetric radar came along radar was designed and put in the field to locate mortar and artiliery positions.

I can faintly remember working on them on the various Rhine River excercises and at the Grafenwor Artillery and Armor Center.
