Not only isn't that true, but it just adds to the waste flow to throw  
out the existing UPS.

I want to recycle that stuff, but it does cost money.  Why not just  
replace the batteries?

I go for aftermarket batteries like Battery Warehouse or Batteries  
Plus.  There are many more which have local presence and even more  
which are maybe not local or even Internet only.  Many times Battery  
Warehouse has given me larger battery capacity for longer run time.

Not only does it cost less than replacing the entire UPS, generally  
well under half, but I don't have stuff ending up in the landfill.
