Brown widows and brown recluses are different spiders and have different effects. The brown (and black) widow has a systemic effect while the brown recluse causes localized necrosis of the tissues around the bite.

I don't know of a good "repellent"- most any ant or roach spray will kill the spider if you spray it directly but just spraying the area doesn't seem to work.  

One more thing- Brown widows love to hide out of sight. You may not see one anywhere- until you turn over a patio chair and find them and their eggs underneath.
