That's sort of what's happening with a trim pot on a mixer - it's having an effect similar to attenuating impedance so pre-fader gain levels are correct.

A friend of mine who does voicework for a Phoenix AOR station insists each mic should have a preamp with dynamics processing, so mics can be "tweaked" before going into mixers and consoles. 

Today there is a lot of automatic stuff going on behind the scenes and you can "get away" with - a lot of clipping and distortion - because listeners have been conditioned to find mp3's as acceptable and don't have higher expectations.  However, there are purists out there who won't even consider certain other mobile phone operating systems because of how happy they are with the sound from Apple devices.
