I'm an extreme beginner at Linux, but found the new New NEW NEW!!! desktop of Ubuntu 11 to be a bit odd. I find the Gnome desktop of Linux Mint 11 to be more friendly ... and Mint is "Ubuntu Inside". Mint 11 is Ubuntu 11 inside. YMMV bob carpenter
