Many web sites are no longer accessible using IE6 and some are only
accessible to IE and not Firefox. We have an Onyx voice mail system that
runs on an old PC. If the cards see any more or less memory and HD space
than the original box it will not work. BTDT when we had to replace the box.
I once installed an upgrade to the CBSI traffic software. The instructions
said IE5 or later must be installed on each workstation that CSBI ran on.
While the program did not access the Internet it used IE5 components to run.
I had a disc with IE5.5 so it worked well. Our Traffic Manager asked to
borrow the IE5.5 CD ROM to install on her home computer. I loaned it to her
as it was freeware. A couple of days later I asked her how the install went.
Here is the dialogue:
Me: "How did the Internet Explorer work out?"
TM: "I installed and uninstalled it four times!"
Me: "What was the problem?"
TM: "It keeps going to AOL!"
Me: "Is AOL your ISP?"
TM: "Yes."
Me: "You can set your home page to anyplace you want."
TM: "I KNOW THAT! IT KEEPS GOING TO AOL!"
Me: "Do you have broadband Internet?"
TM: "No." (And "no" to cable Internet, wireless, home network, etc.)
Me: "You keep saying the same thing. Let me ask this another way. How do you
WANT Internet Explorer to work?"
TM: "Like here!"
Me: "We get our Internet from XXXXX by broadband wireless. There is an
antenna on the roof and a receiver which connects to a switch which
sends the Internet to all our computers over the network."
TM: (Long pause. Wide open mouth.) "Oooh!"
Me: "Your Internet Explorer is doing exactly what it should be doing."
She had dialup at home. You'd have to know her personality. Type A+. I felt
sorry for her husband and daughter with all the cussing, kicking, throwing,
etc. NOT a good scene at all. Funny, in a way....
