[BC] OT: Portable Scanners

Hey folks,
  What's a good durable handheld portable scanner that isn't blocked to
badly in the 800M band and the 154M band.  My son is getting involved in the
volunteer fire department and he needs one that will cover the fire and
police bands in his area.  Sadly I had one that was wide open but in the
last move it appears to have been one of the things that went missing thanks
to my ex.  
Any guidance appreciated
