It typically wasn't the station.  The record companies did this as an
inducement to get the songs played.
They'd get the artist back in the studio and cut a bunch of custom tracks
that were then mixed with the original.

Dancing Man by Q (1977) also had a lot of custom versions floating around,
especially on "Q" stations.
