[BC] Hanging, locking computers

Most of these problems are a result of the installed software trying to contact the "mother ship" for updates. The server is busy since zillions of others in the universe are trying to contact it at the same time. Turn OFF all automatic updates whenever possible. If you can't turn off the updates, search the registry for any reference to "Backweb." Delete all such entries. That will make the application write some error message to the system log and continur, rather than hanging the system. http://www.auditmypc.com/process/backweb.asp

I frequently run into computers that lock up or hang for some reason. The windows O/S tools are of no help; they show that all Window resources are free.
