I really don't think automatic operation is bad. Now, if they can be
properly sorted, that should be a be a station option.
Some stations activate for every weather watch and warning. Of
course, depending on where you live, that may be good, but not in many
areas. Warnings, OK, not watches.
Also, many operational areas straddle jurisdictions. Filtering is
badly needed for unattended operation.
