Jeff, that was great! I hope there are a lot more like him out there.
You know how kids say want they wanna be when they grew up? I had no
idea, but when I was about 8 I was playing over at a neighbors house
whose big brother happened to be a ham. I took one look at the gear
on the desk and I knew that whatever this cat was doing was what I
wanted to do too. The details about the fact that it was only a hobby
didn't concern me at the time of course. Too young to make the
connections.
I didn't know it was a only a hobby at that age, but I did know that
thats I wanted to do. never got into radio proper as a way to make a
living, but I did manage to get a lot of other jobs that were pretty
helpful in training me by default along the way to fix electronic
stuff from tubes to SMT.
I always loved repair work, because it generally is not open to
anyone else's opinion. the thing either works, or it doesn't. There's
only so much the big boss-man can say about your work, and unlike
some other types of work, it's not that open to a lot of superfluous
nit picking. :D
Loved the story. There is hope! :D
