Before the FCC opened up the expanded band, the DFW airport was operating two stations one on 1620 and another on i believe 1640.  I am sure someone else can speak with more accuracy than I, but I have on many occassions listened to the "travelers radio" in the Birmingham, AL area.
 
I was amazed at the skywave at night.
