No, you're probably thinking of WYSL 1400 in Buffalo, which started as
WBNY. It was under McLendon's ownership that the callsign changed to
"Whistle", and today it is WWWS, owned by Entercom. I'm not sure if
WYSL ever used the tower atop the hotel, but I do know it transmitted
from the roof of the Larkin Building along I-190 in Buffalo before
moving to its present half-wave tower at the junction of Rts. 33 and
198 (not the nicest part of town.) Scott Fybush has more info:

WOLF's transmitter has always been located at Van Rensselaer and
Kirkpatrick in Syracuse; the original structure was a Lingo pole, and
the transmitter was a Collins 300FA which remained in regular nightly
service until 1976 when an MW-1 was installed.
