The Barix Instreamers' maximum coding is 192 kbps Variable Bit Rate (VBR)
which peaks out at about 256 kbps.
My ears are about as good as Goran's-and at that quality level I can hear VERY
FEW artifacts-and believe me I've listened for them! By the way, I can hear
FAR MORE on HD radio.
The Instreamer uses the Fraunhofer codec-and pays royalties for it.

Um...
MP3 encoding can be run as high as 320 kbps. I have most of my library
encoded that high.
and when a lower encoded track plays, it's obvious...
But I have a hard time telling the difference between 320 kbps MP3 and
uncompressed wave... of course, neither sounds as good as
analog
HTH!
