Of course - but with 50 kw, they're not really "local" within the
meaning of the term... Like WLW and other Class A AMs, they serve the
larger area.
OTOH, can you imaging:
"the Big One - W L W, Mason!"

Works; that way, the 810 here MIGHT be able to stay on at night! DA-N,
with a major lobe oriented about 025°T and one of the minima at about
215°T...

Sure, see WLW above! The signal will still cover Greater Cincinnati,
regardless of COL when you're running 50 kw... or 500 kw ND-U... <grin>

I'll buy that!
50 kw ND-U!

I don't know about 10 kw minimum, but the idea is to eliminate the Ds as
much as possible... so, unless they can meet the minimum required for
the Class... then they either go to secondary service or.. yeah, dark -
or FM Expanded Band (76-88 MHz)... or a different frequency on AM, at
least... See AM 810 above - the ONLY reason that it can't get ANY
night power AT ALL is skywave from Schenectady....
You know, in looking at the way the FCC allocated the Expanded AM
Band... there should be room for LOTS more stations between 1600 and
1700 with 10 kW D 1 kW N ND.
And even more if the day power is reduced to 5 kW or 1 kW...
Or 10 Watts... <grin>
