What consumer AM radio has great bandwidth with very high frequency audio? 
That does not describe 99.9% of AM radios IMHO.

Without a brick wall 4500Hz filter an AM transmitter will not meet the ITU-R 
mask. I would be surprised if there are stations in London that do not 
comply with the ITU mask recommendations. Perhaps your listening experience 
indicates that bandwidth limiting to reduce interference really does work 
contrary to the common wisdom on this side of the pond.
