Around here I'm not sure our local radio is any better than an iPod. :-/
The best thing I have found is a scanner. I used to listen to the CapMetro buses. They'd report on traffic conditions and their dispatchers would route the express buses on alternate routes.
And don't forget the cops. We were driving up to Waco and passing through Temple, TX. So as not to disturb the family I was listening to the Bell County system with a single earbud. I knew of a crash about 3 miles from where traffic had just come to a stop on I-35. I casually got off the Interstate. The frontage road was backed up so I made the first left I could, crossed over the Interstate, and found a farm-to-market road that parallel the highway. I clocked it three miles, made my next right and voila, reentered the Interstate just past the crash. My wife was amazed I knew to do that. :-)
