I agree with Rich on a lot of what he has said.

I think what really goes a long way is your behavior under pressure.  Often times the only conversations we have with people are when something is wrong.  When the server crashes or the transmitter dumps, yeah, you can get pretty frustrated easily.  But remember that there are countless end users who are just as frustrated and upset as you.  Your demeanor during those times goes a long way at how people perceive you.  Are you the grumpy curmudgeon, or are you the helpful and patient one?
