Exactly, and in the age of Google, the contestant had precisely the
same information available to her as the station would have had.

As you say, we can't be omniscient, but this poor station certainly
didn't set out to kill anybody, they were just trying to attract
listeners. How could they have possibly foreseen having someone who
was literally suicidally negligent of her own situation come into the
picture?

The only thing they could have done was try to limit their liability,
and they did. A United States citizen, claiming to be of sound mind
and body and competent to make the decision made a decision. She was
taken at her word.

I want to be taken for my word. When I consent to a medical
procedure, and even back when I joined the military, I accepted
certain risks. I should be able to freely make decisions for myself,
and so should all of you. What if the insurance companies decide that
it's too hazardous for us to work on transmitters, and all of that
sort of work is farmed out to the manufacturers who can afford the
huge liability insurance policies? To embrace this decision is to
embrace the end of Broadcast Engineering, taken to its logical
conclusion.

What else could this poor station have done? This decision cheapens
us all. I am confident that it will either be overturned or will lie
in legal limbo.
