Several years ago I was seated next to a professor at a famous
engineering school. He had been a government employee early on in the
nuclear program. He was one of the guys to get the yield up. We
discussed the problems in the middle east and he was a proponent of
using nuclear weapons. I argued the middle easterners did not have the
technology to explode a nuke. He asked me when was the last time a
prototype of anything worked on the first try. The nuclear bomb did.
He assured me it is not at all difficult. Getting the yield up, now
that's difficult he argued. It made a real impression on me. Think
about it, the very first bomb worked and arguably better than they
anticipated! He believes in the deterrent of making glass out of dessert.
