It's a sure bet that it wasn't very efficient when the wood got wet. It is an example of "designing" an antenna without knowing a damn thing about antennas. Most of the antenna losses are dielectric losses due to the resistivity of that lossy dirt and vegetation on top of the ground system. Add to that, the losses of wet wood, in close proximity to a RF voltage, it essentially in series with the antenna, and you have a damn good dummy load.

Pretty sure that years ago radio 6KG in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia used a
wooden tower. Came down in storm.
