Yes. You can have well-constructed "homemade" towers. WACE in Chicopee, Massachusetts, is an example. It is a steel pole of various sizes welded together. It is basically a very robust guyed flagpole. An improvement I made when I was Chief Engineer was to drill a hole in the bottom to let accumulated water out. I noticed that the bottom had swelled a bit from freezing. The original designers probably thought that the pole was so well-welded that no water could get inside. That was the first tower I painted. It took a summertime to do it, because I scraped and primed it. That tower will probably last another fifty years.

At radio station WMAM, 570 kHz, Marinette, WI, Its tower is 300 feet 
of stacked well casing, guyed, painted and lighted.  Its been some 
time since I've seen it but I think it sits on a traditional 
insulator.  It must have been done right.  It's been vertical for a 
lot of years too .
