That's likely not far off the mark.

When Facebook was new, they were only taking folks with .edu
addresses.  I still have mine from college, so I was there before the
masses.

Now everybody is on Facebook, and I get an email almost every day
where somebody is trying to "friend" me.  Otherwise, I never go on, I
really don't see the point of it.
