Try a program called MSGTAG. It sends you a receipt when the message 
is actually opened. The free version adds a footer telling the 
recipient you've been notified. The paid version allows you to remove 
the footer. There's no more excuse that "I never got the message."

It's automatic. Neither you or the recipient have to do anything. 
Note that the earlier version caused problems with the old Broadcast 
server. I believe the paid version allows you to remove the tagging 
from specific addresses.

If the object of your affection tells you they didn't get your 
message and you have confirmation, it's probably best to move on.
