True. 

I have a friend that was told point blank by Verizon that he could not have
DSL. He went to Earthlink, who gave him reliable 1500/384 DSL. He's had it for
ten years.

That said, it was Verizon that bent over backwards in RI to give me working
1500/384 DSL 17,000+ feet from their CO.  They removed over 6000 feet of
bridged tap (apparently they measure everything in feet for DSL). A phone guy
spent two entire days in a bucket truck doing this. 
They also installed a new copper drop and an external DSL filter.

There's no way they ever made money on me!

The irony is that if I had been a half mile further AWAY from the CO, I could
have has full 3000/768 DSL from a remote terminal.

Go figure.

You missed the other part that I wrote, which is that CLECs will push  
it more than the LECs will.
