[BC] Primer on Internet Streaming

I need a primer on Internet streaming for broadcast operations.  After
nearly 40 years away from the broadcast industry (!), I have been asked by
my old college radio station to help them with the transition from AM
broadcasting (which they are phasing out) to Internet streaming.

 

They currently have a streaming operation simulcasting the AM programming,
but it sounds to me like a hacked-together setup using a plain old Macintosh
desktop computer.

 

I am a computer and data networking professional, so I don't need a tutorial
on IP protocols or anything. Just a good overview of what equipment and
software might be used for a decent streaming operation fed from a
broadcast-quality console. Also, any suggestions for how to manage both live
streaming as well as the streaming-on-request of stored programming.
