Hate to tell ya, it hasn't improved much in those years.  Like 
someone else mentioned, I have it (Wildblue) here because that & 
dial-up are my only options.   It's still slow, buggy and doesn't 
work in storms.
I wouldn't even recommend it for streaming unless you don't mind 
dropouts.  I'll watch progress during a large download, and the data 
will stop for random lengths of time at random intervals.  There's no 
real pattern to it...sometimes it's fine, other times slower than 
dial-up.  YMMV.
