It's in the way that the PDF is created & stored.  There are basically 2 
different ways.  One will actually store the text and the other creates 
an image.  That's why on some PDF's you can search, cut/paste, etc and 
others you cannot.   The image kind, esp. at higher resolutions, can be 
somewhat of a monster (as you've found.)
