I've been fighting the human level control system for many, many
years. Be careful what you wish for. A proper human level seems to be
when the meter needle wraps around the pin or there aren't nearly
enough LEDs to display the actual level.

In the early FM days most operators came from AM. Now, in our quest
for absolute loudness we've adopted "the processing will take care of
it" approach. We might as well remove any level display from any
audio equipment.

Besides, the record companies release CDs with waveforms that look
like square waves. There goes any hope of dynamic range. Mostly bad
talent reigns and big splotches of green on an editing screen doesn't
give us much to work with in programming or engineering. These are
the people who want a Performance Tax.
