I've been doing some further work with the Knoppix boot CD. I built a small
server and also used it to read/recover data from a couple of hard drives
that Windows couldn't recognize, not could a USB external drive housing.
There's a fairly simple looking process to put the CD into an infected
computer, boot it, and then install and update F-Prot AV software. Then it
will scan the selected drive. I use V5.1.1 of Knoppix and it will write to
NTFS partitions, so it can also delete infected files. Just have to set the
drive to read/write within Knoppix. Easy.
Next time I run into something that's trashed the installed AV software,
it'll be first try. According to some Google searches, it ought to work
well.
