have you checked the capacitors??
they will fail under a rf voltage load.
hey i can fix  your GATES 1,,, what doesn't it do??

p.s.  skip the BE matching network, that's for guy who don't want to  spend 
the time and tune it all correctly. 
 

OK, let me ask this question from a different angle.

You've  just taken over a station with a AM-1A loading into a BE
matching network  (which was later stolen in a break-in) which loads
into the ATU through an RF  contactor and the backup Gates 1 is dead,
and the station has a lousy signal  coverage.

When you run the TX directly into the ATU without the network  the TX
goes into foldback, but you think that the ATU can be retuned for  a
good match rather than relying on the network to match the mismatch
and  therefore improve the efficiency of the system.

What would you do clean  up that mess?
