The problem, tho, is backward compatibility. Not everyone can or wants to pay
the "Microsoft Tax", so they are keeping *Perfectly Functional* computers and
software running and running. They may have a perfectly fine copy of
Office97, for example, and when they buy a new computer, they install it and keep
using it. After all, it has always done everything they ever needed.
Now, someone sends them a "DOCX" file, and they cannot open it.
In the immortal words of Scotty: "The more they soup-up the plumbing, the
easier it is to stop up the drain."
If your "old" software still works, and you can easily use it on your new XP
computer, then keep using it.
I forget how long ago I bought Cool Edit 2000, but it still works, works
well, and I will keep using it "Forever". Adobe can KEEP their Audition. ;)
