Last I knew, local wired telephone companies were not allowed to offer long
distance service, or, if they did, it was a separate item on the bill. You
could choose them, or any other carrier, to provide LD service. I was paying
$75 a month for a wired phone and unlimited LD service. When the economy got
rough about 6 months ago, I let my wired telephone go.

Rant Mode: Wired telephone companies are soon going to go the way of the
buggy whip if they don't make their prices competetive. $35/40 a month for
local service? Please. Add up to $30 a month for LD? Ridiculous! I now have
two cellphones with all the coverage I need, for about $70 a month. Yes, I
miss the wired phone sometimes, but I've learned to live without it--as are
lots of people these days.
