[BC] Could our concept of audio be all wrong?

Robert Orban  had also mentioned source material.  Our daughter just purchased (yes, RIAA, she BOUGHT IT!) the new Kelly Clarkson -ALL I EVER WANTED- CD.  Out of curiosity, I ripped it and opened the audio with Cool Edit.  Give our ears mercy!  It's just a bunch of square waves and sounds like crap.  Why do they do this?
