[BC] Dumb Managers

I had the honor of working for/with the late Edd Routt of Texas. He
wrote a couple of books on broadcasting and worked with Gordon
McLinden on shaping formats. In the '80's the owners brought him in
at KSLM AM/KSKD FM, Salem, OR, to straighten out the stations and make
them profitable. I think I quit four times and he fired me about
three times but somehow I always wound up back at the station and we
finally won each other's grudging respect and became good friends.

I also had the honor to work with Cal Applegate (Give em hell Cal) who
was a Pioneer Broadcaster who started out at KFWB in L.A. around 1926
and was loaned to the WB film lot to do transcriptions for the first
talkies. I became family with him and his wife Gussy. They passed
away in 1988 and I sure miss them.

I have worked for some of the best, fairest, most talented General
Managers
and Program Directors ever. I have also worked for incompetant
jerkoffs who
couldn't buy a clue with a thousand dollar bill.

Both types are out there-I swear it's the luck of the draw these days!

I can say the same, the best, of Chuck Miller, our GM at WNKU. He is a
broadcaster - not from sales - imagine that! He is supportive of
engineering as a critical component of our station.
