Speaking of wives ---- Several years ago, the good folks at Dorrough
gave me a pare of their loudness meters. I hooked them up to my home
entertainment system/theater. My lovely wife of nearly 45 years queried:
"What are they for?" I told her that in my system, not much, but they
sure look nice. I also explained how they show the observer both peak
and average levels, which is more than a volume indicator shows in VU. I
also explained that the smaller the distance is between the peak and the
average, the more compressed the audio is. Now this is a lady who is
technophobic and could careless how anything electronic works, just as
long as I bring home a paycheck. Several years later while watching and
listening to a particularly obnoxiously loud commercial, out of a clear
blue sky, she looked over at me and say: "O my God is that compressed!"
